Why is Claritin® (Loratadine) available over-the-counter?
Claritin® has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for over-the-counter (OTC) distribution at prescription strength. The FDA found all formulations of Claritin® brand of non-sedating antihistamine to be safe and effective for OTC use. Because of FDA approval, we are able to offer Claritin® to the general public without a prescription. Claritin-D®, both an antihistamine and a decongestant, is now located at the pharmacy counter, and is still available without a prescription (except in Oregon). Send To Friend

What's the difference between Claritin® and some other OTC allergy antihistamines?
Unlike many other OTC antihistamines, Claritin® (loratadine) is non-drowsy and does not carry restrictions on driving or operating heavy machinery. What's more, Claritin has once-daily dosing that lasts 24 hours. (Claritin-D® 12-Hour and Claritin® 12-Hour RediTabs® last 12 hours.) Send To Friend

Is the Claritin® I buy over-the-counter the same strength and dosage as the original prescription medication?
Yes. All formulations of Claritin® are original prescription strength. In addition, the ingredient in Claritin® is the only allergy medication available without a prescription that does not cause drowsiness. Send To Friend

Claritin® Tablets, Claritin® RediTabs®, Claritin® Liqui-Gels®; and Children's Claritin® are available wherever over-the-counter products are sold, without a prescription. How old must a child be to take Claritin®?
Claritin® makes a line of products designed just for kids. Both Children's Claritin® Flavored Syrup and Children's Claritin® Grape Chewables are approved for use by children 2 years and older. How is Claritin® Eye different from other Claritin® products?
Claritin® Eye is a topical eye drop formulation containing the active ingredient Ketotifen formarate and is used for allergy eye itch relief. All other Claritin® products are oral and contain the antihistamine Loratadine. Send To Friend

CLEAR Study Results
Cognition and Allergy: Findings on Non-Drowsy Claritin®
The results of the CLEAR Study (Cognitive Effects of Loratadine: Effects on Allergy Response) on cognition and allergies show that non-drowsy Claritin® has been tested and proven to help allergy sufferers perform as if they did not have allergies when treating their symptoms with Claritin®.
Key findings:
Seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR) adversely affects cognitive functioning, alertness, and focus.
Treatment of SAR with Claritin® helps allergy sufferers maintain quality of life and optimal performance on tasks requiring alertness and focused attention such as operating machinery, driving, paying attention in school and performing office work.
