Seasonal Allergen Guide
Learn which allergens to watch out for each season.
Spring: The most common spring allergens include invisible pollens from hardwood
deciduous trees like oak, elm, birch, maple, ash, alder, olive, acacia and hazel. Grass
pollens are also present.
Summer: Be aware of sweet vernal and orchard grass, as well as timothy, bluegrass,
fescue, redtop and perennial rye. In the southern U.S., Bermuda, Johnson and salt grasses
have particularly long seasons.
Fall: During an average season from August until October, ragweed plants can produce
a billion pollen grains each day. Molds are also in full force especially the South
and Midwest.
Winter: Since you're often indoors during winter, household allergens like molds,
dust mites and animal dander tend to be most troublesome.
Tips for Outdoors
- Minimize walks in wooded areas or gardens.
- Stay indoors on hot, dry, windy days, and between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m.,
when pollen counts are usually highest.
- Wear a mask (like an inexpensive painter's mask) when mowing the lawn or gardening.
- Avoid raking leaves or working with hay or mulch if you're allergic to mold.
- After being outdoors, take a shower, wash your hair, and change your clothes to remove
pollen that may have collected.
Tips for Indoors
- Keep windows closed and use air conditioning. Don't use fans; they stir up dust.
Also, keep the house dry.
- Don't leave wet clothes in the washing machine where mold can quickly grow.
- Use exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathroom.
- Cover mattresses, box springs and pillows with plastic cases or hypoallergenic covers, and avoid
down pillows and comforters.
- Keep pets out of the bedroom, and bathe them regularly.
- Replace carpet; it traps dust. Flooring like hardwood, tile and linoleum is better.
- Vacuum weekly with double bags or a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter.
